If you own an FK8 (2017–2021) or FL5 (2023 on) Civic Type R, the downpipe is the upgrade that transforms how the K20C1 feels. The factory downpipe is one of the main restrictions after the turbo. Replace it, tune the car, and spool comes on noticeably earlier with a big lift in midrange. Here's how to choose.
V1 vs V2
- V1 race downpipe: the proven, well-priced option for faster spool and a stronger note once tuned.
- V2 race downpipe: steps up flow over the V1, suited to owners chasing more power now or planning further upgrades later.
Both fit the FK8 and FL5 Type R and the 10th-gen Accord 2.0T.
Catted or catless?
Both versions come catted or catless. For a car that's registered and driven on the road, choose catted. Catless downpipes are off-road and competition only, aren't road-legal in Australia, and will throw a check engine light. Read more in our catted vs catless guide.
You'll need a tune
A downpipe on a Type R should always be paired with a tune. It gets you the gains and keeps boost and fuelling safe. Popular tuning platforms for the Type R include Hondata and KTuner. Book the tune before the downpipe goes on.
Have this ready for install
- A fresh downpipe hardware kit (gaskets, studs, nuts, washers). Don't reuse the old ones.
- Penetrating spray on the turbo outlet studs the night before.
- An O2 sensor socket and anti-seize for refitting the sensors.
- A re-torque check after the first few heat cycles.
