The VT to VE Commodores are still everywhere on Australian roads, and after this many years the same faults keep coming through the workshop. Here are the common ones, what to check first, and the parts that fix them.
1. Power windows stop working
Models: VT, VX, VY, VZ.
Symptoms: one or more windows won't go up or down, work intermittently, or only work from the driver's side.
Worn window switches are one of the most common Commodore complaints. Before buying a regulator or motor, check the switch: if the window works from one switch but not the other, the switch is almost certainly the fault.
2. Rough idle or reduced power (VZ V6)
Symptoms: erratic idle, stalling, hesitation or reduced engine power mode.
A dirty or failing electronic throttle body is a common cause on the VZ V6. Try a proper throttle body clean first. If the fault codes still point to the throttle body after that, and wiring and the accelerator pedal sensor check out, replacement is the fix.
3. Whining or leaking power steering (6.0L V8)
Symptoms: whine that rises with engine speed, heavy steering at low speed, or fluid leaks around the pump.
Check the fluid level and condition and look for leaking hoses first. A pump that keeps whining with clean, full fluid is on its way out.
4. Misfires on the 6.0L V8
Symptoms: rough running, a flashing check engine light, or misfire codes.
On high-kilometre engines, old plug leads break down with heat and age. Check them for cracking or burn marks, especially near the exhaust manifolds, and replace them as a set.
